Leaders have to lead teams through stuff that isn't fun. We don't get to choose if the hard stuff gets done–it has to. But we get to choose how.
I've taken on hard team challenges with great intentions. I began with a clear purpose and the vision, energy, and passion to inspire others.
My mistake was letting the stress of the challenge get the best of me. I focused so much on processes, tasks, and deadlines that I forgot to have fun. Worse, I forgot to let others have fun. I had the chance to inspire and motivate my team towards a shared vision and purpose, but I traded it in for a checklist.
These teams didn't buy in. They let me own the problem. They grew critical, zeroed in on unimportant details, and dug in their heals.
Your team expects you to lead with energy and inspiration–not just a task list. They will work hard, but they need to have fun.
In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun. You find the fun, and SNAP! The job's a game. --Mary Poppins
And every task you undertake
Becomes a piece of cake,
A Lark!
A Spree!
It's very clear to see.....
